People reach for the quality slider first and the dimensions second. It should be the other way round.
Pixel count scales with area, not width. Reducing an image from 4000 pixels wide to 2000 does not halve the data — it quarters it, because you have halved both dimensions. That is a 75% reduction before a single compression setting is touched, and downscaling is close to invisible while heavy compression is not.
The order that produces the best result for a given file size is always: resize to what will actually be displayed, then compress moderately. Not: keep every pixel and compress hard.
A useful check: find the widest place the image will ever appear and double it for high-density screens. Anything beyond that is data nobody will ever see.
The presets here describe a box to fit inside, not a shape to force the image into. A 3000 × 2000 photo fitted to 1080 × 1080 comes out 1080 × 720 — it fits the box on its longest edge and keeps its proportions.
This is deliberate. Stretching a photo to a shape it is not looks wrong immediately and there is no undoing it. If you need an exact square, crop first in an editor, then resize here.
Reducing an image in one large jump throws away pixels rather than averaging them, which produces aliasing — jagged diagonals and shimmering fine detail.
PixSqueeze steps down in halves instead, so each pass averages four source pixels into one, then makes a final smaller step to the exact target. It is a few more operations and the difference on detailed images is clearly visible, particularly on text, brickwork, foliage and anything with a repeating pattern.
Downscaling is the least destructive operation in image editing — you are removing pixels that will not be displayed anyway. Resizing first and compressing moderately gives a better result than keeping full dimensions and compressing hard.
