Attachments bounce more often than people expect. This page presets a 200KB target, which keeps a handful of photos comfortably inside every provider's limit and, more importantly, inside your recipient's.

Gmail advertises 25MB. Outlook.com allows 20MB. Many corporate mail servers are configured far lower — 10MB is common and 5MB is not unusual.
Two things make the published number misleading. First, attachments are encoded for transport, which inflates them by roughly a third: a 20MB file arrives as about 27MB of actual message. Second, the limit that matters is whichever is smallest between your provider and your recipient's. You can send successfully and still have the message rejected at the far end, sometimes silently.
Compressing to a few hundred kilobytes per image sidesteps all of it.
A useful rule: keep the whole email under 5MB and you will never think about it again.
Nobody has ever complained that an emailed photo was too small to see. Plenty of people have complained about a message that would not send.
A photo from a modern phone is around 4000 pixels wide. Your recipient is almost certainly viewing it in a mail client on a laptop or phone, where it will be displayed at perhaps 800 pixels.
Every pixel beyond what is displayed costs bandwidth and gains nothing. Setting Resize to 1920px, on top of compression, typically cuts the file by another two thirds with no visible difference in an email.
Some clients offer to shrink images on send. It is worth knowing what that actually does: the resizing is usually aggressive and fixed, you get no say in the result, and it is applied inconsistently depending on which device you send from.
Compressing first means you see the result before it goes, you keep the original untouched on disk, and the same file behaves identically no matter where you send it from.
